From my point of view is important to understand the initial level of the student and identify the knowledge/skills gaps in order to design the fastest route for improvement and then choose the right teaching methods and resources.
Below are the steps which I usually follow when I am taking a new student for tutoring:
• we start with a setup session and introduction for identifying the learning needs and agreeing the content of tutoring
• a pre-test of students for baseline analysis and identifying the knowledge/skills gaps
• regular feedback during each session
• a post-test of students for assessing impact of tutoring and progress made by student
• a final feedback session, including here exam advice and guidance
